UGANDA READY TO HOST AFRICA SEVENS SERIES QUALIFIER AT KYADONDO

Uganda is set to host the 2026 Africa Sevens Series and World Rugby Sevens Series qualifier from September 26–27, 2026. Eight African nations will compete at the Kyadondo Rugby Grounds in Lugogo for a single qualification slot in the 2027 World Rugby Sevens Series.
The participating countries are divided into two pools. Pool B features hosts Uganda alongside Zambia, Tunisia, and Senegal, while Pool A comprises Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ghana, and Morocco. As a four-time African Sevens champion, Uganda aims to secure its fifth continental title and a spot on the international circuit on home soil.
According to the Local Organising Committee, preparations including security, medical, venue, and media arrangements are well advanced. The final 12-player tournament squad is expected to be announced on September 23. All participating teams will arrive on September 24 and check into Essela Hotel in Kira, with transport arranged for airport transfers.
On September 25, teams will conduct their captains' run at Kyadondo, followed by a captains' photo session at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe.
Head coach Allan Otim said the squad blends experienced players with emerging talent to compete for the podium. Captain Ian Muranyi added that the team is fully prepared to deliver exciting rugby for local fans. Furthermore, the Kyadondo Rugby Grounds have undergone critical improvements, including enhanced drainage works, which organisers view as a strong vote of confidence in Uganda's capacity to stage international rugby competitions.
Organisers have designed the event as a broader entertainment and tourism experience under the theme "Rugby by Day, Festival by Night." The daytime will feature a fun park, a food court, market activities, and high-energy rugby, while the night will bring live performances from artists, DJs, and bands, culminating in a grand fireworks display.
Fans can purchase tickets in two categories: Ordinary tickets cost 20,000 UGX for a one-day pass or 35,000 UGX for a two-day pass, while VIP tickets cost 50,000 UGX for a one-day pass or 90,000 UGX for a two-day pass. The Local Organising Committee encourages all Ugandans to turn out in large numbers to support the national team.
Media accreditation is officially open and operates under World Rugby and Rugby Africa protocols. Accredited journalists will have access to a dedicated press centre with internet connectivity, along with designated media areas and transport arrangements for team arrivals and key activities as attention turns to Kyadondo Rugby Grounds for the weekend.
